Hygiene, access for all, and a caring environment with GEZE door systems

Operating theatres, treatment rooms & patients' rooms and recreation rooms: rooms in doctors' surgeries and hospitals must be designed to be comfortable, handicapped-accessible and hygienic in order to provide the best support for the treatment process. GEZE understands the need for innovative door, window and safety systems for healthcare settings, and it provides customised and solutions-oriented advice at every phase of the project.

Clinics, doctors surgeries or care facilities: these environments place great demands on door, window and safety technology

GEZE solutions help to meet fundamental needs, such as accessibility, preventive fire protection and building safety in the healthcare sector. In addition, particular attention is paid to hygiene.

Healing Architecture promotes an environment that has a positive influence on healing and well-being. GEZE automatic door systems ensure access for all in this context and they support the hygiene measures that are implemented by healthcare facilities. Sensitive areas in particular, such as operating theatres and intensive care units, have stringent hygiene rules. But a hygienic environment also plays a key role elsewhere in hospitals, doctors’ surgeries and care facilities: lots of people have to touch manually operated controls, such as door handles and door knobs, in these busy buildings. And that causes problems when it comes to preventing infections.

The hygienic solution: non-contact automatic doors

Automatic swing, sliding and revolving doors by GEZE ensure hygienic conditions and the safety of everyone concerned at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, for example. This is because you can pass through the doors in the entrance area, corridors, lounges or patients' rooms without touching them at all thanks to our reliable door drives. Coupled with our activation devices and sensors, we can provide customised solutions for any door situation.

Non-contact proximity switches ensure access for all and hygiene

Here's just one example of specialised GEZE solutions in this area: at the Fux Campagna care home in Switzerland and the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen (Denmark), automatic doors with the GEZE GC 307+ provide completely non-contact opening. Sensor push buttons ensure that disinfected hands remain hygienically clean – especially during operations. This also helps to ensure that in especially time-critical situations doors are already open before the accident and emergency doctor reaches them. Alternatively, activation is via a GEZE elbow switch.

Operating theatre doors: sterile, air-tight, and barrier-free

Operating theatres and intensive care units are amongst the most critical areas of a hospital in terms of hygiene. The fast and reliable non-contact opening and the secure closing of doors must be ensured. This ensure that germs are kept out and the rooms are sterile. With Powerdrive HT GEZE offers an exceptionally air-tight solution that is ideal for operating theatre sliding doors: they ensure quick opening in order to avoid losing any time especially in an emergency, and when they close they form a tight seal so that they maintain hygiene in the operating theatre. The operating theatre sliding door lowers by up to 4 mm when it is closed and forms a tight seal against the door frame.

Operating room doors to the largest hybrid operating theatre at the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw have been equipped with Powerdrive HT sliding door drive systems as part of the hospital's hygiene measures. These door systems have also been used on large, heavy sliding door leaves weighing up to 200 kg, including the doors in the X-ray department where reliable radiation shielding is essential.

Heavily used but barrier-free entrance areas

Hospitals have heavily used entrance areas which must provide barrier-free access for children, patients with walking aids and visitors with luggage. GEZE offers lasting and, above all safe solutions that ensure accessibility in these areas:

sliding doors with the GEZE ECdrive drive unit provide uncompromising reliability. Self-cleaning roller carriages minimise friction during opening and closing, so the door leaves move quietly and less maintenance work is needed.

GEZE offers the Slimdrive drive unit for façades and areas where design is paramount. Based on the latest control technology and the use of high-quality materials, the drive's overall height is an impressively low 7 cm. The drive is in use, for instance, at Stuttgart hospital: an inviting atmosphere is created at the Olgahospital / Women's Clinic by using an automatic sliding door system that leads directly to the 'Ark' children's play and fun area. A passage width of almost three metres, sleek door profiles and Slimdrive SL NT-FR drives integrated into the ceiling combine convenient, barrier-free access with emergency exit protection and transparency. So GEZE solutions have been used to create new, handicapped-accessible area.

Easy to use and functional: door openers and door stoppers combined with free-swing and convenient hold-open functions

No more slamming doors, thanks to ActiveStop

No more slamming doors, thanks to ActiveStop

Some people close doors with a little push, while others give them a really powerful shove – however you close it a door should shut quietly without slamming, especially in areas where patients need to rest. GEZE ActiveStop is a system which meets precisely this need. Which means that slamming doors, trapped fingers and damaged walls are a thing of the past. Separate door stoppers are no longer necessary.

Doors can be equipped with the free-swing and convenient hold-open functions for additional convenience. On doors in the main areas of the Robert Bosch hospital in Stuttgart the advantages of the free-swing function have been combined with the convenient hold-open function. The door can be locked in position smoothly and easily at the end of the free-swing area. This standard function prevents any unwanted "slamming" – if there is a draught for instance – and it also stops the doors becoming stuck in a half-open position.

Natural ventilation is important for indoor air hygiene

A healthy indoor climate should be a given in hospitals, surgeries and care facilities. Natural ventilation via automated windows is a convenient and efficient solution here.

Protection ratings for automated windows

In care and health facilities it's important to remember that automated windows are classified as machinery according to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Protection rating 4 therefore applies to all freely accessible power-operated windows whose lower edge is less than 2.5 m above floor level if the area concerned is “regularly used by people who are in special need of protection or who are unable to appreciate hazards”. This applies to recreation areas and patients' rooms, for example.

TÜV-tested solution for window safety system

For power-operated windows GEZE offers the TÜV-tested IQ box Safety solution which meets even the most stringent safety standards – i.e. protection rating 4. This is a safety switching module for the protection of closing edges on automated power-operated windows. Because the IQ box Safety is suitable for all GEZE activation systems (smoke and heat extraction control unit, 24 V power supply, KNX, IQ gear), it can easily be connected to various systems such as an existing building management system, indoor climate regulation, or a smoke and heat extraction system.
